Requirements

The design of the waterproofing system should preferably be carried out by a C.S.S.W. (Certified Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing) who will work within the guidelines recommended by BS8102: 2009 ‘protection of structures against water from the ground’ recommendations. Any work should be carried out by a PCA registered company. This means that you can be certain that the work will be undertaken with very little risk of failure in future years.

Benefits and Advantages
  • Converting a basement is an excellent way of providing additional living space especially when the existing space is limited.
  • Possible added value to the property
  • Adding a new lifestyle by forming e.g. childrens playroom, wine cellar, cinema room etc.
Why you need to Waterproof

Usually some or all walls are partially or wholly below exterior ground. This means that these walls are classed as retaining walls and subject to water pressure depending on the soil structure and water table. Any weakness in these walls will result in water ingress which will show it’s self as a damp walls/floors through to ingress of water.

Methods of Conversion

The majority of below ground waterproofing works are usually one of two methods. These are a Cavity Drainage Membrane (CMD) systems and what is referred to as ‘tanking’ using a cementitious product.

In the majority of cases we offer an advanced Cavity Drainage Basement Waterproofing system. This system comprises of:

  • A full surface cavity drainage membrane system
  • A drainage system using drainage channels and pumps

The Cavity Drainage Membrane system does not stop water ingressing but in effect depressurises the walls/floor by managing any ingress of water to a pump(s) or gravitating out of the building leaving final finishes to walls and floors dry.

There are regulations concerning conversion of dwellings which includes basements under Planning, Building and Environmental Health Control, if there is any doubt concerning this the relative authority should be informed.

It is always advisable to discuss your needs with our surveyors so that the right outcome will be achieved leaving you happy with your new living space.
